The Blurryface Era began on March 17, 2015 with the release of the "Fairly Local", as the lead single from the album Blurryface and ended two weeks after their performance associated with the album Blurryface on July 6, 2017.

In March 2015, Twenty One Pilots' first music since Vessel, was released. On May 17, 2015 the full 14 track album, Blurryface, was released globally. This album enjoyed mainstream success and was a breakout hit for the band, spawning several Billboard Hot 100 hits and eventually becoming the first album to receive RIAA certification for every track. The band released a further five tracks as singles. In August 2016, a song recorded for the movie Suicide Squad was released and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song was later rereleased on a single disc in a special repackaging of the album Blurryface. In September 2016, the band released a cover of the My Chemical Romance song, "Cancer", recorded especially for a 10th Anniversary album of covers for the album The Black Parade. In November 2016, a special three picture disc vinyl, Blurryface Live, was released. This was the last new music the band would release until 2018.

To support the album Blurryface, Twenty One Pilots began touring in Spring 2015, performing at venues across the US, Europe and Australia. In September 2015, the band began the Blurryface World Tour which lasted until May 2016. In May 2016, the Emotional Roadshow World Tour began, featuring a larger setlist and more songs from the album Blurryface. This tour lasted until April 2017. In June 2017, the band performed a hometown tour of Columbus, OH, called Tour De Columbus, ending on June 25, 2017. This was the band's final perfomance before September 2018 with A Complete Diversion to promote their new album, Trench.
