Background and recording

In an interview for Apple Music, Tyler Joseph told about the overall meaning of the song, explaining, "When you strip away what day of the week it is, you lose your rhythm. You lose your sense of what is up and what is down. And that's a lesson that Josh and I learned pretty quickly on tour, because a Friday night and a Monday night could feel the exact same, whether or not we had a show. When the pandemic happened, everything's shut down, everyone was starting to learn that same lesson, where the days of the week lose their meaning, and it was messing with people's reference of time. You feel like you're swirling and your feet aren't planted. The song is really, I'm talking to my wife, hoping that she sticks with me, even though I'm working through this, even though I'm kind of tumbling into nothingness."[1]

The song contains a phone call recording of Tyler's wife, Jenna Joseph, during its bridge section. About the inclusion of the recording, Tyler revealed in an interview: "I was working on th[e] song and I was sitting in front of the microphone working on some vocals, and it was coming towards the end of the evening and she called me from upstairs just to check in to see what's my plan tonight. It was just a very organic conversation where she asked, "Are you working on music?" I said yeah. And she says, "That's cool. I'm tired, I'm going to bed." And I said, "Well, no, I want to watch Friends with you." [...] And then she said, "You know, if you've got the time and if you're feeling inspired, you should just go for it." And I was recording that whole time while on that phone call, and it just happened to fit perfectly as the bridge of the song. And when she says "go for it", I sing a high note and we go into the last chorus and I love it." Tyler also said that Jenna didn't like how she sounded on the final product, wanting to re-record it, which Tyler convinced her to keep it as it was.[2]

American record producer Greg Kurstin also co-produced the song. About his involvement, Tyler said: "I thought, honestly, ‘Yeah, I hear this guy's amazing, but the chances of him adding to this thing in a way that is going to be better than what I think it already is, is probably five per cent. I told him, ‘I don't want you to waste your time because you've got to really figure something out here because I just don't see how this is gonna work…’ And he went in anyway, and he did it! He threaded the needle and he made the song even better and added a lot of really cool elements to it and produced it out. I'm really excited about the track."[3]

Official Music Video

On July 8, 2021, the official music video for "Saturday" was released on the duo's YouTube channel. directed by Andrew Donoho. which was filmed for 3 days in late May 2021. It was filmed in San Diego and Los Angeles, California, and features Tyler and Josh performing the song atop a submarine drove by a group of hooded figures. People begin entering, before the camera pans to the interior, in which a party is occurring and the duo are performing. Moments later, a gigantic sea monster deliberately crashes into the submarine, causing it to break and begin to flood as the duo continue their performance submerged in water and the guests panic. Eventually, the band manages to escape from the sinking vehicle, and emerges on the surface. The video ends with the sea monster slowly swimming by, underneath the duo and remaining guests.

Lyrics

Slow down on Monday
Not a sound on Wednesday, yeah
Might get loud (Ayy) on Friday
But on Saturday, Saturday, Saturday
We paint the town

Lose my sense a time or two
Weeks feel like days
Medicate in the afternoon
And I just want to know
Have you lost your footing, too?
I just pray that I'm not losing you

Catch me floatin' circles in my fish bowl
Keep things fresh
She said that I should change my clothes
I exaggerate the life we used to know, oh, oh

Slow down on Monday
Not a sound on Wednesday, yeah
Might get loud (Ayy) on Friday
But on Saturday, Saturday, Saturday
We paint the town

Ooh, you're good
These are my dancin' shoes
We paint the town
Ooh, you're good
Thought I would dance with you
Might get loud on Friday
But on Saturday, Saturday, Saturday
We paint the town

(Feelin' great)
Life moves slow on the ocean floor
(Feelin' great)
I can't feel the waves anymore
Did the tide forget to move?
I just pray that I'm not losin' you

Catch me floatin' circles in my fish bowl
Keep things fresh
She said that I should change my clothes
I exaggerate the life we used to know, oh, yeah

[Interlude: Tyler Joseph & Jenna Joseph]
Workin' on music?
Yeah
I, I'll just go to bed, I'm tired
I wanna watch Friends with you
Oh, if you feel like you have time to do a song or you're inspired
You should just go for it

(Oh), Slow down on Monday (Yeah, yeah)
Not a sound on Wednesday
Might get loud on Friday
But on Saturday, Saturday, Saturday
We paint the town

(Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da)
(We paint the, on)
Might get loud on Friday
But on Saturday, Saturday, Saturday.
